fountain words

There is a fountain in the wooded area in the center of my college, Mountain View. It is a beautiful piece of art made of rough marble. Here and there, corners of the marble have been polished clean and carved with quotes. Here are the quotes:

This time will become but a small moment
in lifes's scheme of things.
But what I have invested here,
-of myself, of my time, of my thoughts-
Will become a part of what I am to be,
and what I have to give
and how I am to grow.
Therefore, let me not misuse or
misjudge this small moment.
Rather let me give to it all that it has to offer me.

There shall be wings.

What does it mean to be modern?
To be modern is not a fashion, It is a state.
It is necessary to understand history,
and he who understands history knows
how to find the continuity between
that which was, and that which will be.

*

In my celebration of the gift
of life, I am compelled to
return something of
substance to the world.
I must make an effort to
leave the world a better
place for my having taken
so much from it.

You have to keep open and aware to the
urges that motivate you

*

For an artist, there is no satisfaction whatever
at any time. There is only a queer divine
dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us
marching and makes us more alive than the
others

On this day we dedicate this
"Garden of Learning" to all Mountain
View College faculty and staff for sharing
the learning experience with the students
they serve and for the college's deep
commitment to excellence in education
and the creative life it nurtures.
